Foundation of Old Panama
The ancient city of Panama, better known as “Old Panama,” was founded by Pedro Arias de Ávila on August 15, 1519. Homes were built of wood because stone was costly. Later, convents and houses were made of limestone.
The city also had numerous water problems, making it unsafe. It was also surrounded by swamps and marshes, which brought a large number of mosquitoes and diseases to its residents.
Several attempts were made to relocate the old city of Panama, but with many merchants and their merchandise from Europe and South America, it was impossible.
On January 28, 1671, the English pirate Henry Morgan destroyed Panama City, according to historical accounts. After Morgan’s attack, the colonial authorities of the time decided not to rebuild the city, but to move it to what is now known as Casco Antigua.
