Wash before you Wear
When buying new clothes in Panama, or anywhere else in the world for that matter it is a good idea to wash before wearing. There are a couple compelling reasons why:
Garment Dyes on Clothing
Washing out the extra dye that is often left behind on new clothes will stop this dye from being transferred to your skin. Synthetic fibers like acrylic and polyester are often dyed with Azov-aniline dyes which can cause nasty skin irritations to those who are allergic. The reactions can vary in severity from dry itchy skin to more severe swelling and irritation.
Unwanted Hitchhikers on Clothing
Aside from harsh dyes clothing can transfer some other unwanted visitors like lice, scabies, bacteria and fungus, which can jump on board in dressing rooms or factories where the clothes are made. Sometimes harsh chemicals are sprayed on clothing intentionally. For example Urea formaldehyde is often used to prevent mold and mildew. Babies are particularly sensitive to chemicals and skin rashes can occur.
