Health insurance in Panama - The Basics

Did you know that health care provided by the Panamanian Government is available to permanent residents and citizens working in Panama? Despite this, most still prefer private health care. Why? Because it's affordable and it guarantees the best care, quickly.
While it is possible to live in Panama without any insurance, as paying the full cost of medical treatment is sometimes feasible, it makes good sense to be insured. The risk of having an accident is always present. And while most medical procedures are offered at a cost lower than in North America, the price of medical treatment in Panama rises annually. It is important to assess these costs and take into account, when seriously injured medical costs add up quickly. Health insurance is the best way to mitigate the risk.

There are two types of health insurance available in Panama; international and local.

Many foreign residents of Panama buy international health insurance for a couple of reasons:

1) This coverage offers protection in any country, and most foreign residents continue to travel while living in Panama.

2) Some are over 65 years of age, and are not eligible for local coverage.

Local coverage is a good option for those that do not travel often and are under the age of 65 since it is offered at a lower cost.

Local coverage starts at approximately $1200 per year and International coverage is available starting approximately $1800 per year, these prices are dependent on age and deductible.

The best way to determine which insurance plan is best for you is to talk to someone who knows what is available. By asking a professional for all of the information, you will be better able to determine the best option for yourself and your loved ones. Be honest about your health situation, and specific on what you want to be covered for.
