SPAY THE STRAYS COMES TO SAN JOSE, APRIL 2010

Once again, last Saturday and Sunday, Spay the Strays joined forces with Spay Panama to spay and neuter 173 animals during their annual Blitz.  This time it took place in San Jose (on the highway about a mile from Coronado) Despite heat, humidity, and drenching rain, the two groups worked side by side with their loyal and dedicated volunteers  until all waiting animals were accommodated.

DANCING WITH THE STRAYS

Thursday night, the rain didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of over 100 party goers as they danced the night away at Alcazar in support of the Spay the Strays Group.  Most of them were really in the swing of things - dressed in creative costumes and ready to rumba!  Picking winners was really hard but finally the judges awarded the couples prize to Leland and Janece McKenzie who were a PG-13 rated plug and outlet.

SPAY THE STRAYS MINI CAMPAIGN IN SORA

Spay The Strays held their 7th spay and neuter campaign Sunday May 24th in the village of Sora, which is on the way to Altos del Maria. The STS vision is to control the stray dog and cat population in the Pacific Beach neighborhoods.

DANCE AND TRADITIONS OF PANAMA

The Coronado Golf and Beach Resort and Digicel hosted Dances and Traditions of Panama at the Carreta Steakhouse on Saturday, April 11. Dances and Traditions of Panama is a performance of dances in Panamanian traditional costumes and has performed throughout Panama, in Venezuela and in Mexico.

A Venetian Masquerade Dinner Dance put on by the Coronado Social Association (CSA) drew over 50 Expats out to the Equestrian Center in Coronado, to enjoy an evening of food, fun and dancing.

THE FLOWER AND COFFEE INTERNATIONAL FAIR IN BOQUETE

In spite of the devastation caused by the flood of the Caldera River during the month of November, the residents of Boquete joined their efforts to create the 37th Flower and Coffee Fair.  This fair attracts visitors from all over Panama and other countries.

CORONADO CHIRISTMAS PARADE 2008

On Saturday, December 6th, the Coronado Hotel started their Christmas festivities with a Christmas Parade.   Both Las Lajas and Roberto Eisenmann Elementary schools provided the entertainment.  The parade started on Acuanauta street, continued on to Punta Prieta Ave to finish at the Coronado Hotel reception area.

CSA OCTOBER 2008 DINNER/DANCE

The Coronado Social Association (CSA) held a dinner/dance at the Coronado Hotel, organized by Cilla Walsh. The evening was planned for an estimate of 30 people. As news of the event spread the number of guests grew to 67, with people wanting tickets right until the last moment. Guests gathered under the large poolside bohio to enjoy a sit down dinner. Coronado’s chef served appetizers, with a choice of mains and deserts.  A DJ spun American and Latin dance favorites that got people on their feet and shaking.

EL TORO GUAPO - ANTON FESTIVAL 2008

Every year the district of Antón, on Panama’s Pacific Coast covering areas from San Carlos to Rio Hato celebrates a festival to honor it’s cultural and agricultural traditions. The festival, called El Toro Guapo or the Handsome Bull was begun in 1964 by Armando del Rosario, a Panamaian folklorist artist.  The festival which pays homage by its name to the farming and cattle raising communities of Anton, is in its 39th year.

Last week on October 11, El Valle held a first annual Eco-Fair. This event organized by the  la Cooperativa en Formación Valle Verde, was held with the purpose of collecting funds to support the First Ecological Brigade in El Valle.

CHAME 153rd ANNIVERSARY PARADE

Last week marked 153 years since Chame was founded as a district. To celebrate 20 area schools from Chame, Capira, San Carlos, Chorrera, Arraiján and Antón came to march in a parade and pay to homage to the people of the area.

EXPOFLORA 2008

From  August 20 to Saturday August 23, the Second ExpoFlora was held at the Museo Antropologico de Panama-Reina Torres de Arauz.Sharon Rennie, Deb Turl, Alana Berry, Edel Corbett and Barb Schlottke made the trip to Panama to see the flowers.

VIRGEN DEL CARMEN

Every year on or around July 16th the fishing villages along Panama’s Pacific coast gather together to honor Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of fishermen, worshipped by those who make their living on the ocean.  The “Patrona” is prayed to for protection and a good catch.

GORGONA SPAY DAY - FEBRUARY 2008

Spay Panama's Spay and Neuter Blitz came to Gorgona this weekend. The spay and neuter movement is focused on controlling the overpopulation of cats and dogs in Panama, while increasing the quality of life of these domestic animals.  Spay Panama is a non-government organization, having a spay and neuter facility in Panama City. The organization provides low cost sterilizations for cats and dogs. The organization is run entirely on donations from animal lovers and supporters of the cause. Spay Panama was founded in 2001 by Pat Chan and a group of volunteers who have sterilized 9206 cats and 4385 dogs since its inception.

PERUVIAN PASO 2008

Mid January 2008, The Coronado Equestrain Club hosted an annual Peruvian Paso competition. Riders and owners of Peruvian horses from around Panama gathered to show off their horses ability to keep the Peruvian gait, called ‘Ambladura’, which is a synchronized gait of the fore and hind legs. The horse must keep 3 legs on the ground at all times.

CABALGATA DE REYES

 

On January 12th Coronado Equestrain Club saw the 7th Cabalgata de Reyes. A cabalgata is a gathering of horses and riders who come together tomeet and celebrate. This cabalgata saw horses and riders from all over Panama. There was a roadside ride to refreshments, followed by a relaxed ride back to the Equestrian Center.   Later in the day, there were dressage events, riding and lassoing competitions.

XMAS 2007 FOOD HAMPERS

 

December 22, 2007. The San Carlos district covers a number of neighborhoods located all around the town of San Carlos. Each year for the last 4 years a local woman, Maribel Gonzales, who is the representative of the San Carlos District, has been hosting a Christmas party for needy families in the district who have a disabled child or adult living at home.

On Thursday, December 13th over 25 people met at the home of Randy & Ellen to assemble food hampers.  There were people from Panama, USA, Canada, UK, Greece and probably several other countries.

Led by Mary on a donkey and Joseph in toe, brought up in the rear, by Santa and Missus Claus pulled in a cart by two large oxen, the annual Coronado Christmas parade made a slow rhythmic  walk to the Coronado Hotel lobby.

ART IN THE PARK 2009

As promised, the organizers of the third annual Arte en el Parque festival delivered a bigger and better turn out from previous years. 64 professional artists and art students exhibited their works on park railings and benches. Set to the sounds of live musicians, art lovers were treated to a display of talent in the Penonomé town square.

ALLINLATINO POKER TOURNAMENT

Coronado won big at the All in Latino Expat Poker tournament held at the Royal Casino, Marriott in Panama city.  The tournament was the center of a site launch party for http://www.allinlatino.com . The event was marketed to the Expat community in Panama and brought out a significant number of party goers to participate in the festivities.

mola_photo CORONADO MOLA SALES 2007
On Wednesday, August 15, Coronado hosted an exhibit of Molas at the Club Equestre. Molas are hand-sewn cloth panels made by the Kuna Indian Women from San Blas, Panama. The Comarca of San Blas comprises 350 islands and inlets of which sixty are inhabited, located in the Caribbean waters off the coast of Panama. Kuna men are typically Fishermen.
