Bioluminescence in Panama!

Bioluminescence in Panama!

I just found out you could see Bioluminescence in Panama! From February until about April in Bocas del Toro, the phenomenon is most visible. And the best time to see it is during a new moon phase.

In Bocas del Toro, there are actually Bioluminescence tours! Tours typically operate between 7:30 PM and 10:30 PM, after sunset on calm nights without much wind or cloud cover.

You don’t need to book a tour to see this phenomenon, but if you only have a limited time in Panama and want to check it out, working with a group like Kawi Voyage can get you to the darkest, quietest spot where you are more likely to see the water sparkle.

What is Bioluminescence

Bioluminescence is the production and emission of cold light by living organisms resulting from a chemical reaction, typically involving the molecule luciferin and the enzyme luciferase. Predominantly found in marine environments—from surface plankton to deep-sea fish—this natural phenomenon is used for defense, attracting prey, and communication.
