Bill passed to Create Naso Region

A bill was passed in it’s third debate to create a new district, with more than 20 thousand hectares that belong to the Palo Seco Protected Forest, to create the Naso region.

Bill 656 was approved by the National Assembly approved Thursday, October 25, granted the Naso people 160 thousand hectares between Bocas del Toro and Chiriquí , of which 125 thousand hectares are located in the La Amisted National Park.

This initiative has generated some conflict as the park was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) in 1983. Organizations such as the Environmental Advocacy Center and the Audubon Society of Panama, have expressed their concerns about environmental management in the region.
