Panama participates in World Breastfeeding Week

Breastfeeding is the best food a mother can give her child. It improves their health, favors the optimal development of the brain and even protects it from respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases.

From the 1st to the 7th of August in more than 170 countries, the World Maternal Breastfeeding Week is celebrated, an initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO) and Unicef, which began in the 1990s.

Panama joins once again this celebration thathas as a motto " Breastfeeding: The basis of life" . In our country, the world week, aimed at promoting this practice and improving the health of babies around the world, is promoted by the National Commission for the Promotion of Breastfeeding (Confolacma) .

As part of this campaign, Sunday August 5 will be the eighth edition of the Great Tetada , from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, in the clubhouse of Omar Park. Mothers and fathers will gather to promote breastfeeding and eliminate the taboos that exist around this issue. There will also be a family fair, with informative and recreational activities for mothers, children and families.

Breastfeeding not only brings benefits for the child (it stimulates health, IQ, performance in school and income when the child becomes an adult), but also for the mother. Lactating women quickly recover their figure and have a lower incidence of postpartum depression. In the long term, this practice decreases the risk of breast, uterine and ovarian cancer, osteoporosis and diabetes.
