Factory fire causes egg carton shortage

A fire has destroyed the Moldeados Panameños (Molpasa) factory in Tocumen Panama, the factory responsible for 100 percent of the country’s cardboard egg cartons.

Following the fire, the National Association of Poultry Farmers of Panama (Anavip) has been working to  implement a contingency as the majority of the country’s cardboard egg cartons were destroyed in the fire that took place last week.

Anavip Executive Director Maria Lavinson explained that egg cartons are now being imported until a local source can be developed.  She said “to deal with this serious and unexpected event, we have made intense efforts to normalize the situation as soon as possible through the urgent import of packages.”

Last year there were 613 million eggs consumed in Panama, 13.9 percent more than in 2014.
