Police Help Save Sea Turtle

Over the weekend The National Police of Panama helped save a 600 pound leatherback sea turtle that was caught in a fishing net north of river Guázaro in the province of Veraguas.

Leatherback turtles are the largest turtles in the world and can grow up to 2000 lbs! They are ancient creatures with roots dating back 100 million years, and live in every ocean except the Arctic and Antarctic. That being said their population is rapidly declining in many areas throughout the world.

Leatherbacks, while not the most common of sea turtle in Panama they are commonly seen nesting on beaches.
