500 Affected by Flooding

A press conference held September 13 2015, spoke to the heavy rains occurring that have affected around 500 people, many in need of medical attention.

The conditions reported included dermatitis, diarrhea, respiratory diseases, and post-traumatic stress. San Miguelito Health Director Juan Biebarach said 506 people remain under observation in Samaria.

The intense rains caused flooding in the areas of Ciudad Radial, El Trébol, Villa Venus, Jardín Olímpico, Chanis, Santa Inés, Concepción, El Nance and El Porvenir.

Deputy Metropolitan Health Director Torick Arce said that the agency had to remove two families from homes in Pantanal because they lacked basic services. Arce said that another 10 families will also be evacuated.

In the sectors of Samaria and San Miguelito, 91 homes are a total loss and have been scheduled for demolition. Homeowners were allowed to return this morning to salvage any of their belongings. 

The area still does not have electricity or running water. Police have been guarding the area to prevent looting. The government has provided housing to victims and other aid.

A meeting between victims and officials of the Ministry of Housing to discuss a long-term solution to the issue was slated for this afternoon at 4 p.m.
