Baby sea turtles go home!

The Ministry of Environment of Los Santos announced the release of 450 hatchlings, Wednesday December 5th 2018. The baby turtles born in the Las Cañas refuge, were Olive Ridley turtles.

Isla Cañas Wildlife Refuge is one of the Panamanian Pacific sites where the most sea turtle spawning is recorded.The olive lipidochelys species, is a common visitor in Cañas village and Isla de Cañas, among four other species of sea turtles.

Each species of turtle has a unique spanning pattern. Between the months of August to December the Olive Ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), which is the species with the highest nesting recored in Panama, are nesting!
