Sea Snakes in San Carlos

The Ministry of Environment reported the presence of Yellow bellied sea snakes ( Hydrophis platurus ) on beaches along the Pacific Coast. Temporary closures were issued for several beaches and tourist areas due to the snakes.

So far there have been no closures issued for beaches of San Carlos.

Miambiente explained that the snakes are common on the coast during this time of the year, and are not aggressive but are poisonous. The snake has a flat body with black and yellow color, and often swims on the surface but can submerge up to eight hours under water.

 

Fishermen from the district of Pedasí, Los Santos, explained on Monday, February 19, that the closure of the beaches in the region due to the presence of marine snakes, is affecting tourism in the region. 

the fishermen told La Prensa that tourism that generates more income in the area. Edson Hernández, the owner of a hostel and fisherman from the Pedasí area, said the mismanagement of the information has lead to a decrease in tourism in the area.
