This majestic bird can be seen soaring over most of the Coronado shores throughout the year. It has a narrow but long wing which with its forked tail makes it easily identifiable. They can be seen in large numbers circling using the thermal currents and are frequently seen with vultures. Although it eats mainly fish it is also a thief of other birds food and can be seen harrowing other birds in flight. The beak is long and hooked for catching fish. They are a large bird growing to around 100cms (40 ins) and in the mating season, the male has a distinctive crimson red throat which it balloons to attract a mate.
