Will there be protests in Panama over fuel prices?

Following a dialogue with the national government and the transport sector regarding the impact of high fuel costs, diesel prices will fall in Panama.

The Ministry of Energy and Gasoline announced this on September 30th 2026, following news of protests in Panama City that, from October 2nd to 16th, diesel prices would fall.  The agency also announced that the prices for 95 and 91 Octane will rise.

The agency explained that the increase in gasoline prices is primarily due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The Secretariat reiterated that there will be market monitoring to ensure the prices in Panama reflect the international costs.

The reasoning for lowering diesel prices is likely to reduce the cost of transportation, or the cost of food and goods around the country.

Prices are updated every 14 days.

It is not just Panama; many countries are confronting a difficult question: Is it riskier to pass on price increases to the public, accelerating inflation, or offer subsidies that drive up public debt and possibly threaten the stability of national currencies?

Protests in Panama?

At this point there are no protests in Panama announced. Rely on Waze and community groups like Tráfico Panamá, as road closures may occur if manifestations do happen. Currently, there is no news of demonstrations happening in Panama City; however, this could change after the 16th.
