Mariano Rivera receives Freedom Medal

Monday September 16th 2019, Panamanian baseball player Mariano Rivera was awarded the Freedom Medal.

The award, is the highest recognition a civilian can receive from the United States government, was presented to Mariano for his achievements in Major League Baseball by President Donald Trump at the White House.

"Off the field, through the Mariano Rivera Foundation, he has helped provide education to children in need, enabling them to achieve a better future," said a statement posted on the White House website. "The United States proudly honors Mariano Rivera for being a baseball game legend and for his commitment to strengthening the communities of the United States" the statement continued. 

The award has been granted to other sports icons like basketball players Jerry West and Bob Cousy. Golfer Tiger Woods received the award as well.

Along with the Freedom Medal 2019 has marked a notable year for Mariano having also been elected for the  Baseball Hall of Fame.
