Varela meets China’s Wang Yi at UN bilateral meeting

Foreign Minister to China, Wang Yi, met with President Juan Carlos Varela during the United Nations General Assembly in New York that took place September 25th, 2018.

 Also in attendance was Vice President and Foreign Minister Isabel Saint Malo de Alvarado.

Juan Carlos Varela expressed satisfaction with the recent development of bilateral relations since diplomatic relations were established between Panama and China over a year ago. 

The president of Panama continued to express the bilateral cooperation benefiting the economy, trade, investment, tourism along with cultural engagement. He spoke to the relationship as a friendship, sure to benefit future generations.


Wang Yi expressed his sentiments of a successful visit to China last November by President Varela. Yi explained that “despite its small size, Panama’s bold decision to establish diplomatic relations with China reflects the broad mind and global vision of the Panamanian government and people.” 

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Panama 15 months ago, bilateral relations have formed a favorable situation for both countries explained China’s foreign minister. Yes, fields like trade, investment, and finance have seen this benefit. But also, infrastructure, power grid, direct flights, culture, and education are benefiting from these relations. 

Wang Yi expressed his confidence in the diplomatic relations and the possibilities that they could bring in the brief meeting.
