Sentencing doubled for murder of Catherine Johannet

The Public Prosecutor’s office (MP) has announced a change in the sentence against the 18 year old convicted for the murder American, Catherine Medalia Johannet, in Bocas del Toro in February of 2017.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) announced the change in sentencing on Friday September 7th.

Initially, the 18-year-old was sentenced to 12 years in prison, but - after the prosecution’s appeal - he will now spend 24 years in prison.

The MP had announced last July that it would appeal the decision before the Superior Court for Children and Adolescents, taking into account the seriousness of the crimes charged: homicide, robbery and rape.

The corpse of Johannet, 25 years old, was located at the crossroads between the community of Wizard and Red Frog, Bastimentos district, on Isla Colón, Bocas del Toro .

The Panamanian authorities offered a reward of  $50,000 to the person who provided details that would lead to the capture of the person responsible for the crime, which occurred on October 24, 2017, in Cayo de Agua.
