20 countries that discriminate against Panama

Panama has issued a list of 20 countries in Latin America, Europe, and Asia that have applied discriminatory or restrictive measures against the Republic of Panama.

Among the countries on the list are Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, Croatia, Slovenia, Estonia, France, Greece, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Cameroon, Georgia, Russia and Serbia. Naming these countries is the first step in an evaluation process to take action towards the countries, that could negatively affect Panama’s economic and commercial interests. 

The Official Gazette states that Law 48 of October 26, 2016, aims to create a process for the country to take the corresponding diplomatic steps needed to create proposals and act against states that affect the economic and commercial interests of Panama. 

La Prensa reports that The Minister of Commerce and Industries, Augusto Arosemena, clarified "he will have to analyze the issues individually to see what measures these countries have taken against the country." The minister added "this is an important point and that it is the first time that Panama has drafted a list of countries that discriminate against it." 

According to this regulation, the corresponding diplomatic steps must be taken and proposals and actions to be taken against States that affect the economic and commercial interests of the nation must be proposed.

The measure will begin to be effective as of its publication in the Official Gazette.
