Panama fishing industry to enter Chinese market

A Chinese delegation has visited two production plants in Panama that are interested in accessing the Chinese market. These plants are located in the provinces of Colon and Herrera.

Panama’s fishing sector is emerging. With an objective of being commercialized in the Asian market, which has the second largest economy in the world and population exceeding 1,300 million, Panamanian plants are working with Chinese delegates on a strategic plan.

The Delegation of the Office of Quarantine, Imports, and Exports of the People’s Republic of China visited Panama to meet with the head of the agricultural portfolio, Eduardo Enrique Carles.

"The intention is that the Panamanian health system is certified by the Chinese quarantine authorities. Once we comply with the access conditions, we could be the first exporters with new varieties of fish products of national origin, reaching a market of hundreds of millions of consumers, "said Minister Carles.

"We have a strategic plan to increase the country’s exports, the agricultural sector has the capacity to produce, satisfy national demand and also generate varieties of products with possibilities to meet the standards of demanding other markets.

The program "Panama Exports" and our Agribusiness Unit are working intensively to place products of Panamanian origin in different markets, explained the Minister of Agricultural Development.

We hope that by the end of 2018 the country’s fish exports will surpass $200 million and opening in the Chinese market would be the key, said Carles
