Panama send aid after Hurricane Irma

In the wake of Hurricane Irma, the Panamanian Government is working to send humanitarian aid to the islands affected. Furthermore, the government of Panama has transferred Panamanians from the British Virgin Islands home.

Aid like hygiene items, blankets, food, bottled water, and clothing was sent by the Government of the Republic of Panama to San Martin Island, one of the islands that were most affected by Hurricane Irma.

President Juan Carlos Varela thanked those who help provide aid for their solidarity shown asking the population to continue to support "our brothers from the Caribbean islands".
"Today Panama initiated an unprecedented humanitarian assistance operation by establishing an airlift to send aid,” said President Varela.

On Monday five Panamanian citizens who were in the British Virgin Islands were transferred to Panama. According to reports four more Panamanians remain on the island and will be provided with transport to Panama this week.

The aid was provided by Panama Coopera, a system working to better the coordinating the cooperation between countries to receives and transfers aid from the international community.
Panama's Coopera program aims to create a greater impact by ensuring the immediate response emergencies due to natural disasters.
