Panama Health Official Replaced for Playing Hooky to Watch Soccer

President Juan Carlos Varela has replaced Panama’s Minister of Health, Francisco Javier Terrientes, after he reportedly left his post to catch a Copa America game in Chicago.

The quick move was likely in response to reactions by political commentators, who were eager to point out his absence in the midst of a serious flu season, that has lead to 18 deaths and nearly 700 hospitalized patients. While the country struggles to obtain sufficient vaccines for AH1N1, the strain of flu responsible for approximately 35% of cases, Varela appoints Enrique Carles to the position of Health Minister as his successor.

As for Francisco Javier Terrientes, who’s termination will be effective July 1, he will be appointed to another position, likely in the agricultural industry explains Varela.
