The first cry for Independence

This Tuesday November 10 will mark 194 years since the First Cry of Independence; a historical event occurring in the village of Los Santos on November 10, 1821. Today the event is celebrated and remembered throughout the country.

This important milestone in Panamanian history, remembers the courage and strength of one lady named  Rufina Alfaro. While some believe Sra. Alfaro is simply a myth, she represents the rising energy in the Panamanian population that created the tipping point that lead to independence.

The first cry for independence in Los Santos sparked a series of screams in several parts of the country.

There were several causes that paid the Independence of the Villa de Los Santos at the time these were: the continued abuse of its authorities, the serious economic situation, the declaration of American independence and the French Revolution.

The desire for freedom among santeños grew quickly, culminating with Don Segundo Villarreal, who formed a battalion of volunteers willing to give their lives, declaring independence.

In Panama, the celebration the epicenter of the celebration is in Los Santos, however, the day is also celebrated in the districts of San Miguelito, La Chorrera, Bugaba Chiriquí, and the village of Juan Diaz in the city capital.

Celebrations include parades along with the the participation of state institutions, universities, colleges and schools. Expect banks and government organizations to be closed tomorrow Tuesday, November 10th, 2015.
