Resolutions......

Yuck, I hate to even think of the R word, reason being every Resolution I ever made before New Years failed....or so I thought!!  Every morning you wake up is a new start to a day a week a month a year or a lifetime.  Everyday is someone's birthday and a start of another year, everyday is the start of another 24 hours, every hour for that matter is the start to another full day.  So why do we leave all of our promises to ourselves and our loved ones to January 1?   For some of us it is procrastination, for some we like to start with a clean slate, and for others it is simply because everyone else around us is talking about the R word.  As I said I despise the word and the concept, until a friend of mine on New Years Eve said "I call them goals or aspirations", aha ok that I can do.  So Playa Community get out your goal list and lets get to it....NOW!!

Your resolutions don't all have to be accomplished today or even tomorrow, this is usually what leads us to not completing our task, or losing the resolution list in the wash.  However a conscious effort and change of attitude has to start taking place now.  Human beings naturally fear change, we have a fear of failure and  a  fear of disappointment.  I am telling you to be patient  If you really start working on your goal today you will be surprised at what starts transpiring over the next few months. If I look back on my accomplishments or life changing decisions I have made in my life the dates are all over the place.    None of them happened in January.  I graduated from University on June 21st, we moved to Panama on December 19th, I quit smoking on November 9th, I bought my first home on July 17th, I decided to sell my first home on April 6th, I made a drastic career change on June 22nd, I joined a running group on September 19th, I decided I was going to train for a marathon on October 31st, I began a nutritional cleanse on November 20th.  All of these   events have happened over the course of my lifetime and none have occurred immediately after the clock struck midnight and the fireworks  exploded. What I can tell you is that a mental shift occurred to change something weeks or months before.  What I am trying to say is a resolution can happen on any day of any month of any hour, you just have to be patient and keep working at your goal.

A bad habit can take a minute to create which could then take a lifetime to break.  There is not a single person in this world that does not want to change something in their lives, change is necessary change is really inevitable.  Change is uncomfortable yet it is vital to growth and happiness.  My weekly article is about Health and Wellness.  To me that means waking up every morning and spending my day feeling good physically and mentally.  When I don't then I know something has got to change.  I was reminded  over the holidays  the definition of insanity:  "Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result".  Eating dessert at 10pm at night before I go to bed and wondering why I can't sleep or wake up feeling like crap, does not mean I am eating the wrong dessert, It probably means I should stop eating sweets before I go to bed.  If you are looking at losing weight but continue to eat a tube of Pringles everyday or pasta 3 times a week or drink a small case of beer a night and don't exercise, one or all of those habits would have to change, not completely but enough to create a new habit a good habit.

However big or small, why not make a conscious decision to do something for the better right now.  It could be getting up and going for that walk on the beach you have been promising yourself you would start doing for months.  It could be picking up that Spanish learning CD you have been staring at on your desk for the last year, or it could be calling up a friend you have wanted to talk to but just keep putting it off for a better time.  It also could be putting down the cigarettes in the middle of the day and becoming a non-smoker, or picking up an apple to eat instead of a box of chocolate.

Today I am going to email my yoga instructor and make a commitment to attend at least 1 class a week.  I have been putting this off for a year.  My back hurts and massages are wonderful but I know I need to do something for the long term.  So now after a year I am going to do what I set out to do last January....I am going to Yoga.

Feliz año nuevo mis amigos.  Remember a new beginning can start at anytime.  We are going to really shake it up this year and make 2010 a year we all want to remember!
