Labor Day in Panama

Labor Day in Panama

May 1st is International Workers’ Day, and in Panama, the day is recognized as a day of rest to commemorate the struggle for labor rights.

The origin of this date goes back to 1886 in the United States, when the workday was established to be eight hours. The only limit at the time was that no one could work more than 18 hours without just cause, and the consequence was a $25 fine.

On that day, violent clashes broke out between the police and the workers. Later, at the end of May 1886, several employers agreed to grant the 8-hour workday to several hundred thousand workers.

In Panama, May 1st is a national holiday and is commemorated with various activities:

  • Marches and rallies organized by unions
  • Commemorative events in defense of labor rights
  • Spaces for reflection on current working conditions
  • Cultural and community activities

Beyond being a day of rest, this date represents an opportunity to remember the progress made and the challenges that remain in the workplace.
