Panama's Most Amazing Traditional Event
(costaricapages.com) The Festival de la Mejorana took place this weekend in Guarare, a small town just outside of Las Tablas. Though Panama has many annual festivals and events, the Festival de la Mejorana is certainly one of the best.
Folkloric groups from across Panama made the trip to Los Santos province to put on a great display of their unique traditions. There were processions, parades, cultural events, bullfights and dances by the most popular Panamanian tipico artists.
Sunday is usually the most popular day of the festival since that is the day the hours-long parade runs through the crowded streets of the small town. This festival is different than other Panamanian festivals because all non-tipico music is banned in the bars and cantinas during the 5 day event.
This weekend’s festivities were very successfully, apart from some rainy weather and a couple of people were injured by crazed bulls. One rodeo clown was thrown through the air when a bull punctured his neck with a horn. In the other incident a bull either escaped the ring or was let out to run the streets of the square and a couple of people were injured.
Though many festivals in Panama are worth attending, the Festival de la Mejorana is certainly one of the most enjoyable a great place to get a sense of Panama’s many unique traditions.
