Today is Martyrs Day in Panama

Today is Martyrs Day in Panama. Each year, January 9th marks a very important moment in Panamanian history. It is a day that paved the way for the return of the Canal to the republic. Today people in Panama remember all of those who fought for sovereignty in Panama on January 9, 1964.

The national day, where no alcohol is served in the country, is a day of mourning. Public and private offices will be closed today and loud music prohibited.  Flags will be at half-mast as a mark of respect.
