Another Succesfull Panamanian Rodeo in La Chorrera

A Panamanian style rodeo called “Hierra” well publicized through the Expat news community took place at the end of August, in Chorrera. The rodeo, a yearly event put on by the Madero family, is a day-long festival with music, dancing and food. The center of which is an action packed horse, cow and cowboy show that brings out the best cowboys in Panama to strut their stuff in competition.   The “Hierra” is a unique style of rodeo. No lassos are used to bring the animal down, instead a cowboy on horseback grabs the cow by its tail and pulls it to the ground. Points are awarded to competitors based on the animals fall. Maximum points are awarded for the successful execution of “vuelta campana” a maneuver that gets the animal on its back with all four legs in the air.

Over 100 cowboys competed in two rounds. Jerin Tate of Englishnewspanama had the honor of carrying the rodeo standard to announce the final rounds. The first place winner received $100 and a cow. Second place received $300, $200 for third and $100 for fourth place.

The evening celebrations were launched with popular bands Nenito Vargas y los Plumas Negras taking the stage to keep the crowd going and a fireworks display heralded the end of the party.
