Record-setting Supermoon tonight
Tonight, November 14th, 2016, the moon will appear larger than it has been in 7 decades. This is due to the fact that the moon's elliptical orbit, the perigee, is about 30,000 miles closer to the Earth than the other side of the orbit, the apogee.
Tonight’s moon will be approximately two hours of perigee, this could mean that a supermoon this big and bright has not been seen since 1948. according to NASA, the moon will not be this close to the Earth again until Nov. 25, 2034.
NASA explains that if you're looking up tonight with no frame of reference, the supermoon could look just like any other moon. However, if you are able to catch the moon-rise, when the moon is near it near the horizon, you will witness a "moon illusion”, this can make the moon look larger. "When the moon is near the horizon it can look unnaturally large when viewed through trees, buildings, or other foreground objects," says NASA. -
While the effect is an optical illusion, it doesn’t take away from the experience or photo you may be able to capture.
Photo tips for capturing the moon
Include something in the foreground to create a frame of reference, think about including a tree, building or the beach creating a panoramic shot. If you are using more advanced equipment try using the daylight white balance setting, since the light is actually coming from the sun.
