The Yellow Dog Project
Did you know that there is a movement in the dog world, called “The Yellow Dog Project” aimed at avoiding unpleasant encounters with dogs?
It was started Alberta by Tara Palardy in June 2012, inspired by the country of Sweden. Owners tie a yellow bandana around their dogs neck if they are not particularly social. The initiative is now used in 47 countries, including Canada.
When a dog sports a yellow scarf, it does not mean it is aggressive or dangerous, rather that the dog has a personal space or ’’ bubble '' that must be respected. The scarf can mean several things, such as the animal is recovering from an injury, or that the dog should avoid contact with other dogs to stay calm. Or that it is still a puppy who has not finished his socialization. This movement creates safety for pets their owners and for others.
This approach reminds us that in all cases, it is always best to ask permission from the owner of an animal prior to approach, yellow scarf or not.
