Another Successful Beach Cleanup in Gorgona

Yesterday, Sunday March 6, over 30 dedicated beach cleaners set out to Playa Gorgona to pick up litter that had collected on the shoreline. The beach cleanup organized by Libre de Basura is a monthly effort that takes place on beaches in the Pacific Coast community.

The group of beach cleaners, excited to tackle a new beach, started cleaning at 8:00 a.m., first taking on the bohio area where lots of trash collects from beach goers. One of the problem areas that beach cleaners took on was a burn pit behind the shaded huts where trash has been being burnt for what appeared to be a very long time.

The most problematic items to burn are plastics and styrofoam as these release toxins into the air which we eventually breathe in. So, those working on cleaning up the pit focused on ridding it of these items, collecting cans for a local who said he would take them to the recycling center for the deposit. Eventually workers, who were making new bohios joined in using a rake to collect litter in a new pile starting to form.

Working hard into the afternoon, Coronado and Gorgona residents we’re scared to get dirty and covered in burs from the mangroves where much of the litter collects. Beach cleaners ventured as far as the Gorgona fishing village, from the initial meeting point, the Coronado Country Club towers.

This beach cleanup was supported by the administration of the Coronado Country Club towers who graciously once again, allowed us to dispose of the collected litter in their deposito where it will be collected. A huge thank you to everyone who participated. Be sure to check the Playa Community Events Calendar for upcoming cleanups and volunteer opportunities in the community.
