Carnival Cancelled in Las Lajas and Sora

The mayor of Chame, Nieves Mayorga, has confirmed that Carnival in Las Lajas and Sora will be canceled due to the lack of water sources and administrative problems.

According to the municipality, the little water that remains in the Las Lajas riverbed is contaminated, therefore the board in charge of Carnival for these districts has decided to suspend the celebration. There have been Carnival celebrations in Las Lajas and Sora for the seven years.

The mayor also confirmed that although Chame river is not on the list of  authorized water sources from which culecos can draw water, the district of Chame plans to supply tanks with 3,000 gallons of water from the mouth of the river.

There will be culecos in Chame, Bejuco and Nueva Gorgona, lasting for a maximun of four hours.

The mayor also spoke to a lack of financial support from the ATP as one of the reasons why Carnival is not a large economic benefit for many local businesses in the area.
