Maiyuri Carrasco Race for Breast Cancer

On Saturday October 3, people from all over Panama came together to support breast cancer awareness at the MAIYURI CARRASCO race that took place on the beach in Gorgona at 4:00 p.m.

Myself and some friends decided to participate this year, as we we were assured we could walk, not run, the 5k.

We arrived a bit late, but were told that afternoon began at about 3:00 p.m. with people picking up their race kits, and signing up to participate. We started at wrong beach access (Bahia) around 3:30 p.m., but were pointed in the right direction shortly after, finding out way to the right beach by process of deduction.

The event took place on the beach near the Biltmore. Participants used the access where the new Bern project Royal Palm, is being built.

After tracking down the right location we each made our $20 donations and collected our race kits. The kit included a pink t-shirt with the race details on it, a pink plastic water pouch and a reusable white or pink bag.

The race officially started at about 4:45 p.m. As many were not racing some began the walk/run early in hopes of finishing before dark. The incoming tide also encouraged some early departures. Despite our early take-off it didn’t take long for people to start racing by us.

By the time we reached the finish line balloons were being let off into the sky in honor of those who have passed from breast cancer. Notes were written with prayers for those still fighting, and congratulatory speeches were being given. We were told the notes would be displayed as part of a larger piece of art as part of breast cancer awareness month.

Here is a video covering the day:
