Mantaray Golf Club by Royal Decameron
Mantaray Golf Club is part of the Royal Decameron resort and residences located just off the Pan American Highway at Rio Hato. Consisting of 18 holes, each with 4 tee stations, this Randall Thompson designed golf course was mostly in very good condition the day two friends and I played. The issue was the greens, which were being worked on. The design is challenging but not too daunting. With water hazards on many of the holes, tight fairways and out of bounds are very common. The fairways and tee boxes are in good shape. Mantaray is a semi-private, resort style course, meaning there are paid memberships but the public is also allowed to play for a fee. The website states weekday greens fees of $48.15 and weekend greens fees of $62.40, however, when we played on Friday, the fees were around $80 including cart. The course also offers a four-some to play for $60 each. There is a bag drop off at the proshop. The carts are well maintained electric EZ Go and come with a bunker rake. Walking is permitted, but I don’t recommend it. There is a lot of up and down and some of the tees are a long distance from the previous green with little shade anywhere. There is good signage pointing to the next tee, which comes in handy when one is not familiar with a golf course.
There is also a small proshop with a limited inventory offering some clothing, golf balls and a few other items. Attached is restaurant/bar with a menu offering quick hungry fixes like burgers and sandwiches.
Wilson Ospina is the resident pro who previously worked at Coronado Golf. In addition to overseeing the golf operation, Wilson also gives lessons, organizes tournaments and runs the golf academy. He speaks some English
Overall impression of Mantaray: this is a very nicely maintained and clean golf course. The bathrooms were clean and up to date. The water hazards and views make this course very aesthetically pleasing to the eye. It has a good mix of difficult holes, easy holes, bunkers in good condition and a layout, which works well.
