The Coronado Extreme Triathlon 2014

This year, the Triathlon Coronado Xtremo will take place on September 14, 2014 leaving the Coronado Beach Club at 7:00 a.m. While the event is a sprint, or short-distance triathlon, it is called an “extreme triathlon” with good reason. The race begins with a 750-meter swim in the unpredictable Pacific Ocean, continues with a 20 km bike ride through Coronado’s rocky back roads, and ends with a 5k run finishing on soft sand. The Coronado Extreme Triathlon has been taking place during the months of August or September for the past 14 years.  The event, popular among locals and expats is organized by Union de Triathlon de Panama. The Coronado Extreme Triathlon is among the oldest triathlons in Panama, the oldest being Tri Xtremo Portobello.

We spoke with Eladio Quintero director of Union de Triathlon de Panama (UTP), who told us this event is a favorite among armature athletes. “Each year hundreds of beginner and novice athletes take on the goal of competing in this beach Triathlon”. Since the event rules permit relay teams, the Coronado triathlon is considered to be a great beginner event. Many, however choose to take on the swim, bike ride and run, themselves.  These competitors are ranked in categories determined by age and sex.

While some participants are there to compete, for many the Coronado Extreme Triathlon is more about camaraderie, and beating their personal bests.

For Carl Painter, 26, the Coronado Extreme Triathlon is about stepping out of his comfort zone and accomplishing new goals. This September, Carl and his friends (also first timers) will compete in the event as a relay team. Carl and is an avid surfer, so he will take on the swim. His friend, Jeff Hayden 26 takes the bike and Tony Santone will the run.

For David Bayliss, 58, the Coronado Extreme Triathlon is an anniversary. Last year was his first ever Triathlon event. Since then David has pushed himself to train for and complete in several demanding events, including the Tri Extremo de Portobelo and Duation Playa Bonita, both UTP events. David told us that for him triathlons have become a fundamental part of his lifestyle here in Panama.  “Once you get involved, you never know what event you might be training for next!”

This year, at the Coronado Extreme Triathlon On September 14, over 100 athletes will take to the warm ocean waters at 7:00 a.m. Playacommunity will be there to cover the event and cheer on the athletes.  If you are interested in learning more, or would like to register to the 2014 Coronado Extreme Triathlon email Eladio Quintero at: triathlonpanama@hotmail.com or call 6379-4972.
