Rotary Club of Playa Coronado raises $9000 for Wheelchairs
The Rotary Club of Playa Coronado raised $9000 at the first Fundraising event in support of their Wheelchair Panama project. On July 30, fifty people attended a Wine Dinner at LaTeca Restaurant in Coronado where a unique four-course menu was served along with four selected wines donated by Felipe Motta Wine Stores. In order to provide specially designed wheelchairs to disabled children and adults, The Rotary Club of Playa Coronado has set a fund-raising goal of $30,000 by September 15. This will allow purchase and distribution of approximately 150 wheelchairs to be delivered to those in need from Penonome, San Carlos, Coronado and down to Chame in March of 2015. These rugged and adaptive wheelchairs are able to withstand difficult local conditions. In keeping with Rotary’s motto: Service Above Self, Rotarians are committed to this project and WILL make it happen.
The Rotarians in the Playa Coronado area, as well as those surrounding areas that will be receiving these wheelchairs, are asking for help from neighbors, friends and business owners so that it will allow us to come to the aid of these disabled people and give them the mobility and dignity they deserve. Additionally, the caregivers of these recipients will have the freedom from carrying their loved ones everywhere they have needed to go. A $200 donation will buy one custom wheelchair, and if you donate that amount, your name will be put on a plaque that will be permanently attached to a wheelchair. A $500 contribution from you or your business will give you a framed certificate with a picture of the chair being delivered to the chosen recipient and a $1000 donation will give you the certificate with the picture and the permanent plaque on the wheelchair.
A team of local Rotarians have already measured 39 potential recipients with more measuring to come. If you know of anyone that needs a wheelchair, we ask you to please contact us so that these people can be identified and helped.
Our next Fundraising event will be held on Wednesday, August 27 at Picasso Bar and Restaurante in Coronado. Local musician John July (a Rotarian), will be joined by Bobby Henderson for an evening of music. There will be more fund-raising events and we will be keeping everyone advised.
If you have any ideas for a fundraiser, if you would like to host an event, or if you want to contribute (any amount is gratefully accepted), please get in touch with us. People helping people is what giving is all about. We WILL make this happen. Just tell all your friends here as well as wherever home may be. Spread the word so we can give these people “wings.”
