Finca La Maya classes at the Coronado Community Center
On Saturday, May 3 the first classes will be offered at the new Coronado Community Center (“CCC”). CCC is located above Multibank in the Village Mall (Machetazo) and plans are in progress to host interesting new activities in coming months: language classes, cultural presentations, art, music and song! The new programs are a collaboration of Finca La Maya and CCC and will offer students easier access to the weekly Saturday classes, with local buses, taxis and parking all easily available in Coronado. Two levels of English classes will be taught on Saturdays from 10 am to noon: beginners and intermediate. In the afternoon, a new music class will be offered Saturdays 1- 3 pm. Both classes are open to all ages.
La Maya and CCC have had the great luck to find Senora Carmen Alvarado. Alvarado is a highly qualified music teacher with a diverse and international teaching background. She was born in Chile, received a Masters degree in music from the University of Indiana in the USA, and founded a music school in Barquisimeto, Venezuela. Two years ago she was brought to Panama by Catholic monks to teach music and choir to the Visitation nuns in Panama City. Senora Alvarado can teach piano, recorder, guitar, choir, and how to read music. She also gives private lessons. Her specialty has been creating and conducting chorus.
Finca La Maya will provide donated musical instruments for students to use, and the new class at CCC will continue what Elmore and Janice Stuart started when they visited FLM in early April: teach the kids about musical concepts, singing, and then teach them to play simple songs on recorders and keyboards.
Both of the new classes cost $5 per student with part of the fee donated to the Coronado Community Center. For students who cannot pay, an option will be offered: they may participate in specific volunteer activities in the community in lieu of paying for classes. All interested, all ages, are encouraged to attend.
Other activities will be at CCC beginning in May and June, including:
~ Art & Photography Exhibition: Opening receptions on Friday and Saturday, 13 and 14 June, 5-7 pm.
~ English language and training for Professionals
