First Commercial Flight Lands at the Scarlett Martinez Airport
April 4 2014 - The first commercial flight landed at 11:15 a.m. this morning, at the Scarlett Martinez International airport in Rio Hato, Panama. The Sunwing Charter flight brought media attention from all over the nation to document the highly awaited landing. The Sunwing Charter came from Toronto, Canada. Travelers on the flight were on their way to the Riu Hotel that recently opened its doors in the Playa Blanca development. Once passengers exited the aircraft, the charter flight flew to Tocumen International in Panama City, where passengers flying back to Toronto boarded. A source at the airport told us, they expect charter flights coming from Canada every Friday.
While he could not confirm, a worker from the handling company said he expects Air Transat will be bringing charter flights from Canada shortly as well. He was unsure if other international flights would be flying into Rio Hato. He did not expect domestic commercial flights to be entering or leaving from the Scarlett Martinez airport, only private planes.
While Sunwing does have the ability to sell flight tickets at the airport, we are unsure if flights leaving Panama will be available for purchase at the Scarlett Martinez airport.
The airport is a large project that is still developing. The airport had been highly anticipated by those living in the area as well as those looking to travel to the area. Not only will the Airport create more jobs locally, it will also be a large push for tourism in the area.
