Tsunami Warning In Effect For Panama
An 8.2 magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Chile on Tuesday April 1st, approximatly 83km NW of Iquique, Chile. Within 45 minutes of the quake the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) reported high sea level readings indicated a tsunami wave had been generated.
6-foot waves have reportedly already hit the Chilean coast (CNN.com). A tsunami warning is in effect for Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Panama. A tsunami watch has been issued for Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico and Honduras (PTWC).
Don Winner of Panama-guide has up to date info on the situation. His last update at 8:24 p.m. reported the tsunami wave is expected to reach Panama in about 4 hours. Bulletins will be posted on Panama-guide.com hourly or sooner if conditions warrant.
UPDATE: All tsunami watches and warnings previously issued have been canceled except for tsunami warnings for Chile and Peru, the Pacific Tsunami Center announced.by CNN's Steve Almasy 9:44 p.m.
