2nd Annual Canada / US Challenge Cup

What a nail biting finish we had at our 2nd Annual Canada / US Challenge Cup held on July 3rd at the Coronado Golf & Beach Resort.  We had 6 teams of 4 players for our Florida Scramble Tournament. A Florida Scramble works like a conventional scramble except that when a golfer’s shot is picked he/she can not hit the next shot. This format adds a tactical wrinkle not present in an ordinary Scramble. It is no longer an automatic decision to select the best-placed ball every time. Our tee off, a shot-gun start, at 8 AM was followed by lunch at the clubhouse at noon.  We had several non-golfing friends / spouses join us for lunch.  At the end of regulation play, after all the scores were recorded and applicable handicaps subtracted we had a tie for first place, with 2 teams recording a score of 59.  This required an extra hole play-off, pitting the Canadian / European team of Sharon Rennie, Johann Walti, Cliff Parish and Martin Hauser against the All-American team of Barry Kelly, Tony Giordano, Matt Casey and Joseph.

The two teams assembled at the 100 yard marker on the 18th fairway where one member from each team took the first shot towards the green, Martin’s shot landed in the bunker while Barry’s shot landed on the green.  For all intents and purpose it looked like the All-American team was going to win BUT the gutsy Canadian / European team would not give up. The winning shot came down to the fourth and final players – Sharon Rennie and Matt Casey. Both were in similar positions on the green but Sharon had to putt first.  The crowd gathered around the green, the pressure was on Sharon.  She and her team mates analyzed her putting line, slope of the green and speed needed. Unfortunately her putt just missed the hole. Next was Matt, his putt came to a stop just on the edge of the cup and a second later the ball fell in giving the All-American Team the win.
