UPDATE: Monkey on the Loose in Coronado
Coronado residents have gathered on the corner of Calle Roberto Esienmann and Ylang Ylang to watch a monkey that has been in the area for several hours. Early this moring around 7:45 a.m. a local resident noticed the monkey sitting outside of Gourmet Pizza on his way to drop his kids off to school. When we asked him about the monkey he said: “it was almost as if the monkey was waiting for someone.” The monkey is still in the area now (11:00 a.m.). Since early this morning people have been stopping to see the monkey. Many are attempting to give him water and bananas. The monkey has been accepting, leading some to believe the monkey is domestic, and is in fact waiting for someone. The wandering monkey has been gaining much attention and has created somewhat of a road block at the intersection of Roberto Esienmann and Ylang Ylang.
UPDATE: La Autoridad Nacional del Ambiente (ANAM), are on their way to the Coronado area to investigate the situation. (11:28 a.m.)
UPDATE: Two members from ANAM arrived in Coronado to help the monkey (1:00 p.m.). The monkey, is a geofferoy's spider monkey, and has been nicknamed Jeff. When ANAM had arrived and Jeff was in a fenced in area. Nobody was home at the housing development, located across from Calle Ylang Ylang on Roberto Esienmann. ANAM and a couple helpful community members were able to open the fence and lure Jeffery closer with food. They said Jeff looked hungry and distressed. With several residents trying to assist in the situation Jeff has still not been captured.
A caretaker from a neighboring house said he recognized the monkey, and knew his owners. ANAM authorities said they would have to leave as there were other animals waiting for their help. This was around 2:00 p.m.
ANAM said will be back this evening, or tomorrow in the morning to check on the situation. Until then Jeff will be roaming around Coronado, so drive carefully.
