Coronado welcomes the Conservatory of Classical Ballet

This month a new and exciting addition to the arts and culture scene of the beaches has opened its doors. Situated in the new, bright and modern Coronado Mall Plaza (opposite the Equestrian Club), Artistic Director, Fury Darlington, and Director of Productions, Mary Jay, have a vision to “put Panama on the map” in the world of ballet.Fury, originally from Montreal, Canada, has been dancing since 9 years of age and was a professional dancer for many years with several world-famed ballet companies such as Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, before intensive years of studying and teaching in Canada, Russia and, most recently, Costa Rica. She describes ballet as being a “passion from the soul” and seeks to give Panama’s budding dancers the opportunity to learn the beauty of the Vaganova Ballet technique.

Vaganova was a distinguished Russian dancer, who’s brilliant and globally taught systems of learning ballet. This is what Fury calls a “uniquely scientific approach to movement”. The result is a beautiful ballet fusing true precision with the classic art of movement and dance – seeing the style in action, truly takes your breath away.

Mary and Fury join our Coronado community fresh from their successful endeavors in Costa Rica which resulted in 3 ballet dancers from their studio being accepted on scholarship to the National Ballet of Canada, and which won Fury a Gold Medal from Canada for her contribution to arts and culture in Costa Rica.

Mary’s dream for Coronado’s Conservatory is to bring “a full-length, top-notch production” of the internationally-renowned ballet The Nutcracker to Panama, incorporating professional dancers from their network across the world, combined with new talents found right here in our community.

Want to get involved? The Conservatory is offering classes for children from 4 years and upwards to adults – boys and girls are both welcome.
Mary describes Fury’s studio as a place where “students become a family”.
