Self Defense Classes in the Pacific beach area

On March 14th 2013 Richard Hamilton, 6th degree Taekwondo expert and certified Krav Maga instructor, met with a group of over 50 expats to teach a basic self defense class.  The class took place in the social area of the Coronado golf and was offered to the community free of charge.   The class began with some basics proactive practices to increase ones confidence. Richard explained to the group, it all starts with attitude.  Stand strong, look people in the eye, dropping you head as you pass shows weakness. A simple nod, rather than a ‘hello’ will suffice, as tone of voice can often convey fear. Richard was also clear in stating he feels safe in Panama, maybe even safer than he did in the US. Everybody has a right to feel safe and secure, and anyone can accomplish that sense by taking precautions in their daily life.

Richard gave basic instruction in Krav Maga, a self defense method used by the Israeli defense forces.  Instruction focused on several key points that could save your life in a conflict. Krav maga is about counter attacking as soon as possible, targeting attacks to the body’s most vulnerable points such as: the eyes, neck, groin, ribs knees etc. and maintaining awareness of your surroundings. Richard spoke to muscle memory an integral part of defending yourself. Muscle memory comes with practice said Richard, thus learning a defense position, and a couple of vulnerable areas to attack must be practiced daily to be most effective.

Krav Maga also teaches methods of escape from a knife or gun wielding opponent. These methods include kicks and grabs that will disarm the attacker.
