Board of Directors Elected for Gorgona Neighborhood Watch
Residents of Gorgona have elected a board of directors to initiate the neighborhood watch program Vecinos Vigilantes. Jim Rizik, who has spearheaded the effort in response to a series of crimes that occurred over the past few months, was elected President. Over the course of the past two months, a number of community meetings have been held with police, business owners and local residents. Rizik says the police will be following up with the board to provide specific costs and activities required to implement the program. "The time frame for implementing the neighborhood watch is all about cost and how successful our fundraising is," he states. "If we could implement this tomorrow we would." Rizik is a retired police office from the U.S. and a homeowner in Gorgona. As a police officer he worked closely with community programs – experience that could prove invaluable as the Gorgona project moves forward.
The board will keep the community up to date on the progress through emails, websites like Playa Community, and through ongoing contact with local elected officials, including the Mayor and Corredigor.
The Gorgona Neighborhood Watch group and the local Police are hosting a community event on Friday, December 14th at 6pm (not 5pm as previously reported). This will include a basketball game between the Police and local kids, as well as music, prizes and the Neighborhood Watch group will be on hand to answer questions and provide information. The event will take place at the basketball court and soccer field.
The Board of Directors for the neighborhood watch program includes:
