Playacommunity spoke with Alejandro Urrea, professional polo player from Bogotá, on his work with Roberto Esiermann to bring Polo to the EquestrianClub in Coronado. We asked Alejandro to tell us a little bit about the sport of polo and its prominence here in Panama: Polo in PanamaPolo is a very prominent sport in Panama There are many professional and aspiring players living in Panama. Cerro Azul, Hacienda Country Club, located in Panama City is home to one of the most noted Polo clubs in Panama. Alejandro plays polo at the club, and speaks highly of many aspiring players and professionals who play there. Alejandro has his own polo school in Panama City aswell, the school is called Oropolo.

Panama’s polo season is from January to July. The season coincides with Panama’s dry season for several reasons. The main reason is that the field must be dry. Secondly, it is important for the horses to have a rest period, without time to rest the horses could be seriously injured.

Alejandro has been working alongside Roberto Esiermann to create a polo club in the equestrian center. Doing so, would make polo accessible throughout the rainy season here in the Pacific beach area of Panama.

Plans for a Polo Club in the Coronado Equestrian Center
Coronado sees less rain than Panama City. By bringing Polo to Coronado, polo players will have a facility in which they can maintain their skills, even in the offseason. The club will rent horses to those looking to practice, play or learn in Coronado. Alejandro Urrea will be available to teach classes Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. starting in October.
