Panama Animal Shelter Needs Your Help
Fifteen years ago in Puerto Rico, animal shelter manager Mari Pily found herself troubled by all the hungry and stray dogs and cats in her neighborhood. Thus began her life's journey to caring for, feeding, and supplying veterinary medical attention to local strays. Despite the help she was able to provide, Mari Pily knew it wasn't enough. She lived in constant worry that one of the animals would be run over by a car as they frequently chased vehicles and played in the street. When Mari Pily moved to Panama, she saw an alarming number of strays in the area that most of the local animal lovers had given up on due to the overwhelming numbers and increased, uncontrolled breeding. Mari Pily, however, refused to do the same, and began taking animals into her home to care for them.
Through the money she made as a lawyer, personal credit and the help of family and friends, she managed to get vaccinations and veterinary attention for a growing number of strays that she was attending to.
Then, she met Jamie, a fellow animal lover who was also struggling to care for a few stray dogs. As Mari Pily and Jamie began to help each other with their animals, an animal shelter came into being. The financials obstacles they faced then as they do now are great. “We are inconstant need of food, medical supplies, and good permanent homes for each of them”.
For the last 7-8 years, Mari Pily has rescued hundreds of cats and dogs. The animal shelter spays and neuters the animals, gets them vaccinated and even provides specialized medical care for animals suffering from blood diseases, tumors and other life threatening health conditions.
The shelter shelter is crowded. The enormous number of sick animals currently cared for in the shelter has caused a tremendous financial burden for the shelter. With over $5,000 per month in expenses, Mari Pily has spent every penny of her savings.
“We are grateful for the help we receive from supporters.” The shelter recently received a 100 vaccination donation, a tremendous help to the shelter and the animals who reside there; however, more help is still needed.
A foundation, Hogar Alberque San Roque has been created to support the cause. There are several ways to assist:
- Make a contribution through to the foundation, Hogar Alberque San Roque.
- Adopt an animal from Mari Pily's shelter to offer the love and care it desperately needs.
- Spread the news. Tell friends and family about the shelter and urge them to help anyway that they can.
- Volunteer work other services.
