alt(Newsroompanama) If you are one of Panama’s drivers complaining about the “Pele Police” extra addition to traffic snarl problems  you should be grateful according to reports from National Police Director Gustavo Pérez.

He says the use of the handheld devices to monitor drivers’ records has had a direct impact with  Panama's crime rate dropping 35 percent since they went into use.

At road checks about 8,000 people have been arrested on outstanding warrants.

Pérez said that some 2 million people have been checked since the devices  went into use last year.

He made his comments on Wednesday, March 2,  at the funeral of officer Juan Samaniego, who was  shot and killed in the line of duty in Colón on Monday.
