Mayor of Chame Removed From Office In Corruption Investigation

(Panama-Guide) The Third Court of the Criminal Circuit in La Chorrera, José Hoo Justiniani, ordered the removal from office of the Mayor of the District of Chame, Euclides Mayorga, following a request by the Third Anti Corruption Prosecutor. The decision was published in a resolution dated 28 January 2010, said the judiciary in a statement.

Judge Hoo Justiniani substantiate the decision on the irregularities that were detected during an audit conducted by the Comptroller General of the Republic, which recorded an alleged economic harm to the municipal treasury of more than $100,000 dollars.

Therefore, the judge ruled that he would require sworn affidavits be taken from the city officials and subordinates of Mayor Mayorga, and for this reason, his underlings might be too fearful to declare any irregularities, according to the press release. The Mayor will remain separated from his position until the investigation and judicial process is complete, said the press release. (La Prensa)
