Robberies Against Tourists Arriving at Tocumen Airport Decrease
(Panama-Guide) - La Prensa - The Director General of the National Customs Authority, Gloria Moreno de Lopez, said that statistics on robberies of tourists entering the Tocumen International Airport have declined. Through a press release, Moreno de Lopez said in the past these events were attributed to the leakage of information or a network of corruption, presumably by Customs officials. However, she noted that "this is over." She explained that "we have convinced officials at the National Bank to extend their operating hours at the branch at the Tocumen International Airport (8:00 am to 10:00 pm), so travelers can make bank deposits in order to avoid becoming a victim of these criminals." What's more, it was reported that in early 2011, Customs has already seized $284,500 from tourists who made false declarations about the cash they were carrying upon arrival at the Tocumen International Airport, said the press release.
