Panama addicted to cell phones and more coming
(Newsroompanama.com) Panama with a population of only 3.4 million has nearly six and a half millions cell (mobile) phones.
Of the 6.496 million users. The majority prefer prepaid cards. Only 324,808 subscribe to contracts with one of the country’s telephone companies.
A statistical assessment shows that the number of mobile phones per 100 inhabitant is 185.4 percent and allowing for very young children an other non used it indicates that many individuals have more than one mobile communication device.
This trend has been increasing since 2005, when statistics showed a total of 1.784 million subscribers and a penetration of 54.2 percent.
A study by the Social Analysis Division of the Ministry of Finance (MEF) earlier this year showed that out of 10 Panamanians, 6 have 2 phones.
Growth prospects for the telecommunications sector, remain encouraging and , authorities are projecting an investment $693 million for the mobile phone industry in the next four years.
