Panama Ecologist Awakening Continues

Panama, Mar 25 (Prensa Latina) Indigenous, farmer, and ecology organizations entered their second week of wakefulness in defense of the environment, denouncing it is affected by private and government projects.

Representatives of those organizations remain in handcrafted tents on the Cathedral's Plaza, near the Republic's Presidency, in the city's old area.

They are showing signs and banners with their demands, holding meetings and carrying out marches to the parliament and government institutions to present their demands.

One of the activists, Aleyda Suira chained herself on Monday in front of the Palacio de las Garzas (Herons' Palace), the Presidency's headquarters, in rejection of the mining, hydroelectric, and residential tourism plans, which damage nature.

Suira said they would remain protesting until the authorities meet their demands, something for which they requested an interview with President Martin Torrijos.

Government spokespeople expressed their willingness to hold a dialogue with those organizations at the National Coordination Table for Development, in which diverse social sectors, as businesspeople, participate.
